Stress is caused by being “here” but wanting to be “there.”

—Eckhart Tolle

Worrying does not get one anywhere

Worrying tends to go hand in hand with stress; the two feed off each other. While stress is driven by a sense of feeling overwhelmed and losing control, worry is mostly driven by fear. This is the fear of uncertainty, of the unknown, and of unwanted outcomes. When we visualize, we create an image in our mind of a future event and give it an affirmative and positive outcome. The opposite is true of worry, which is visualizing future failure and affirming that it will happen.

Our default mode of dealing with both the unknown and unwanted is to worry. We are always worried about what might go wrong, about what people think of us, about how things are going to work out, and so on. It is a natural tendency for us to focus on unwanted and negative outcomes. However, worrying does not add value nor provide any solution to our situation. It merely magnifies both the negativity and seriousness of the whole thing and its perceived outcome.

Just like stress, we can’t eliminate worry totally from our lives; however, we can reduce it to the barest minimum.
